Squarespace vs Wix: The Differences That Matter After 500 Builds
Every comparison of these two has a feature table where Wix wins on count and Squarespace wins on "design". Both are true and neither tells you which to pick. We've built more than 500 Squarespace sites and a handful of Wix sites, and we specialise in Squarespace on purpose. Here's the reasoning, including the cases where Wix is the better buy.
The six differences that change outcomes
1. What happens when a non-designer edits the site
Wix's editor is freeform: drag anything anywhere, absolute positioning, pixel control. That's why Wix sites are easy to start and easy to ruin. A client moves a text box, it overlaps a button on tablet, nobody notices for a month.
Squarespace's editor is constrained: sections, a grid (Fluid Engine), site-wide styles. You can't put something where it doesn't fit. Clients edit Squarespace sites for years without breaking them. This is the biggest practical difference and it only shows up after launch.
Wix Studio, the agency-oriented editor, narrows the gap with a more structured approach. It also raises the learning curve back toward Webflow territory.
2. Templates you can't switch
On Wix, once you pick a template you're on it; switching means rebuilding. On Squarespace 7.1, every site is the same underlying template with different styles, so a redesign is a restyle and a re-layout, not a rebuild. It also means every Squarespace feature works on every site; on Wix some features depend on the template you chose.
3. Performance
Wix has invested heavily in speed and current Wix sites test well. Squarespace sites are fast when built carefully and slower when the site-wide animations are left on and the images are huge. On a clean build the two are close; on a careless build Squarespace has one specific problem (the fade-in animation delaying LCP) that we fix in five minutes and Wix has a general weight problem from its app ecosystem that's harder to unwind.
4. The app market
Wix has an app market with thousands of apps: bookings, events, restaurants, hotels, forums, memberships, pricing tables, pop-ups. Many are Wix-made and good. Many are third-party and of varying quality. A Wix site can do more out of the box, and a Wix site with fifteen apps has fifteen dependencies, fifteen bills and fifteen things to break.
Squarespace has a small extensions directory and relies on native features plus code injection. Less choice, fewer surprises. If you need something niche (a restaurant reservation system, a hotel booking engine, an events platform with ticketing), Wix probably has it and Squarespace probably means an embed.
5. Custom code
Both allow it on paid plans. Wix's Velo lets you write real JavaScript against Wix's APIs, with a database and backend functions. It's closer to a development platform. Squarespace's code injection is CSS and front-end JavaScript against the rendered page; no backend, no database.
For a designer adding effects and integrations, Squarespace's approach is simpler. For a developer building an application, Velo is far more capable. Most small business sites are the former.
6. Pricing and what's hidden
Both are similarly priced at the plan level after Squarespace's 2026 increase: Squarespace Core at USD 29 a month annually, Wix's comparable Core plan in the same range. Wix's cheaper plans show Wix ads and limit storage; Squarespace's cheapest plan blocks custom code and charges a transaction fee. Both give a free domain for a year.
The hidden cost on Wix is apps, many of which have their own subscriptions. The hidden cost on Squarespace is add-ons like Acuity and Email Campaigns, which are optional and priced clearly.
Where Wix is the better buy
We say this to prospects fairly often.
Restaurants with online ordering and reservations. Wix's native restaurant tools are ahead. Squarespace handles a menu and a link to a reservation system.
Hotels and rentals. Wix Hotels and the booking apps around it. Squarespace has nothing equivalent.
Event businesses selling tickets. Wix Events is native. Squarespace means an Eventbrite embed.
Sites that need a database-backed feature without a developer. Velo plus Wix's data collections lets a capable non-developer build things that need custom code on Squarespace.
Very tight budgets with DIY. Wix's free and cheap tiers get further than Squarespace's if you can tolerate ads or limits.
Businesses already deep in Wix. Switching costs are real. If the site works, don't move it because an agency prefers the other one.
Where Squarespace is the better buy
Any business where the site will be edited by staff who aren't designers. It's the difference between a site that holds and a site that drifts.
Brands where design consistency matters. Photographers, architects, studios, consultancies, anyone whose site is a portfolio of taste.
Businesses that want one vendor. Site, domain, email, forms, scheduling, small shop, newsletter, invoicing. Squarespace has each and they're built to sit together.
Agencies and clients who want the site to be maintainable by someone else later. A Squarespace site can be picked up by any of thousands of designers. A Wix site with Velo code and twelve apps is harder to inherit.
Blogging and content. Squarespace's blog is cleaner to write in and manage; Wix's has improved and still feels like an app bolted on.
What people get wrong about both
"Wix is for beginners." It was. Wix Studio and Velo are serious tools, and large businesses run on Wix.
"Squarespace is only for creatives." It's the default for creatives because of design, and it runs plenty of dental practices, law firms, manufacturers and event sites, including ones we've built for global brands.
"Wix has better SEO." Both are fine now. Wix had real SEO problems a decade ago and fixed them. Squarespace has always been fine. Neither will rank your site; your content and structured data will.
"You can't migrate." You can, with effort, in either direction. Content moves; design is rebuilt; redirects protect rankings. Two to six weeks.

Questions we get
Is Wix Studio the same as Wix? Same company, different editor, aimed at agencies and designers. It's more structured and more capable than the classic Wix editor and closer to Webflow in feel. If a Wix agency pitches you, ask which one they'd build in.
Which has the better e-commerce? Wix has more native commerce features (dropshipping, print on demand, multi-currency on higher plans, more shipping options). Squarespace's commerce is simpler and cleaner. Neither competes with Shopify above a small store.
Which is better for a photographer or artist? Squarespace, for gallery layouts, image handling and the way it treats typography. This is the case where the "design" reputation is earned.
Which is faster to launch? Wix, with its ADI and template count. Squarespace, with Blueprint AI, is close. A day either way.
Can I move from Wix to Squarespace? Yes. Wix doesn't export content in a useful format, so pages and posts are moved by hand or scraped. Products export to CSV. Redirects protect rankings. Two to six weeks.
Do you build Wix sites at all? Rarely, for existing clients with a specific need. Our work is Squarespace, and we'd rather refer a Wix project to someone who does Wix all day.
